The Santa Cruz community was calling for a great Middle Eastern restaurant for a long time, and Zameen answers that call with a vengeance! I grew up eating a lot of homemade Middle Eastern food (specifically Persian), and Zameen definitely measures up. Opened in 2007 by England native Ed Watson, it’s influenced by Iranian co-owner Mike Assar -- Watson’s father-in-law. Some dishes are made from Mike’s own recipes. But Zameen’s offerings aren’t limited to Persian. Moroccan, Greek, and more: there is something for everyone. I have been to Zameen twice now, and each time I left happy. Judging by the crowds of smiling diners I encountered, others feel the same.

When Mike Assar moved from his native Iran to the United Sates in 1964, he never dreamed how his life would pan out, but he had the drive and passion that has propelled him through life. He put himself through college by waiting on tables in Chicago—getting his first glimpse of the culinary world. But it was years later that he would help operate and cook in a restaurant of his own.

There’s a lot happening on the local scene – as always. Just as we kiss Breadstix Deli goodbye, up springs Zameen Mediterranean Cuisine in its place. I had been keeping my eye on this new spot, waiting for its opening. And it was worth the wait.
